Join us Saturday June 1st for our annual Open House

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Rowing Club has received a grant from the Participaction Community Better Challenge for their June 1, 2019 Open House. According to Participaction, 25 – 30% of Canadians report feeling persistent loneliness or social isolation. In turn, they are on a mission to help Canadians become more regularly physically active and reconnect with each other while doing so.

Getting active boosts the confidence and happiness of individuals, while connecting them to others with common interests, and brings people together. As part of the Community Better Challenge, the Winnipeg Rowing Club (WRC) will be hosting their annual Open House to do just that. This grant will allow for the WRC to showcase the sport of rowing to a wider, more diverse audience in Winnipeg.

Janine Stephens, two-time Olympian who won the silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London as part of the women’s eights rowing team, will be at the Open House teaching those new to the sport how to row, with hopes of sparking interest and love for the sport with more Winnipegers.

Flood Fight 2019 – Call for Sandbagging Volunteers

This Saturday, April 6th, 2019, the WRC will need volunteers to help in this year’s flood fight. With the waters expected to reach 2009 levels, 22.6 ft James, with the base of our boat bay doors seeing flood waters at 18.5 ft James, we will need to erect a wall approximately 5 ft high in order to withstand this year’s waters.

At 9am, we’ll be tidying up the boat bays, erecting the flood barrier wall, and three or more volunteers with trucks will be needed to go pick up sandbags, while the rest of the volunteers put up poly and start a sandbagging line. If you are willing to lend a truck, please contact Andrew Lamont, and meet at the City’s Thomas Avenue Yard.

Remember, many hands make light work!
