Winnipeg MB (August 26, 2016) — While members of Canada’s National Rowing team return home from the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, dozens of brand new rowers are gearing up to compete for the very first time! The 22nd annual Community Rowing Challenge (CRC) takes place this weekend on Winnipeg’s Red River:
Saturday August 27
Racing take place 8:00am – 12:00pm
Winnipeg Rowing Club @ 20 Lyndale Drive
The majority of participants in the Community Rowing Challenge are brand new to the sport of rowing. They’ve been training together all summer, and are now ready to put their training to the test. Quads – boats containing four rowers, each holding two oars – will go head-to-head against each other for a distance of 500 meters.
“The Community Rowing Challenge is a great way for people to try the sport, and to train with others that they know, which can make for a more comfortable learning environment,” says Sheila Wilson-Kowal, coordinator of this year’s CRC, and competitive rower for the WRC. “This year we’ve got 14 crews ready to get out on the water and show what they can do.”
All races begin 500 meters upstream from the Winnipeg Rowing Club, and end at the Winnipeg Rowing Club dock. Spectators (and media cameras!) are welcome. Come down to the Winnipeg Rowing Club, bring your lawn chairs and watch from the Riverbank. Or get a great birds-eye view from the Norwood Bridge.
