The 2014 racing season wrapped up with the National Rowing Championships last weekend on Elk Lake, Victoria. The annual event allows Canadian rowers and para-rowers from across the country to race for the title of of National Champion.
Winnipeg Rowing Club was well represented at the event with four current members, as well as two alumni. Paul Thiessen, who trains full time in Victoria with the National Rowing Centre won the C final of the Men’x 1x event for a 13th place overall. Loch Inglis and Riley MacCharles also competed in the Men’s 1x event finishing 3rd in the D Final (21st) and 5th in the E final (29th) overall.
In the women’s events Marianne Bergmann and Cassie Gauthier raced the 1x event finishing 6th in the D final (24th) and 5th in the E final (29th) respectively. Cassie spent the week prior to the regatta participating in Rowing Canada’s Row to Podium development camp in Victoria where she worked closing with national team coaches.
WRC almuni Emily Cameron and Tom Watson also competed in the National Championships. Emily, a multi year member of the Canadian National Team, finished 2nd overall in the women’s 1x event. Tom Watson, who recently returned to Canada from Oxford University, finished 3rd in the Lightweight Men’s 2-.
The National Rowing Championships regatta is just one of the many steps for the athletes on their route to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which is less than two years away. The events are all small boats and as such, all of the athletes race in pairs or singles.
