Derek Riley, a lifelong member of the Winnipeg Rowing Club,  was inducted into the Order of Canada during a ceremony Wednesday at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. Riley was appointed a member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the community as a businessman, athlete and philanthropist.

A champion in the sport of rowing for more than six decades, Derek Riley was a member Canada’s Olympic rowing team in 1952 and is a member of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.  Riley worked tirelessly to build the sport of rowing in Manitoba, and was instrumental in establishing a new facility for the Winnipeg Rowing Club at 20 Lyndale Drive in the early 1990’s. The Riley name is featured prominently at the Winnipeg Rowing Club, with names of racing shells such as Spirit of the Riley’s and Derek Riley.

  2. Wondering if this is the same Derek Riley who rowed in the Royal Canadian Henley Juniors in 1949 when the oar broke in the middle of the race. If so, my dad was rowing in that race with him as a team mate. How would I get in touch with Derek? blga@charter.net
