WRC Appoints Head Coach

Steven TaylorWinnipeg Rowing Club (WRC) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Steven Taylor as WRC’s Head Coach beginning November 16, 2013.

Steven is a Level 3 certified NCCP coach who has been involved with the WRC for over 15 years, both as a competitor and as a coach. He competed for both WRC and the Manitoba Rowing Association (MRA) as a Junior and U23 athlete.

Steven started coaching in 2002 and has since coached all levels and member programs for the WRC from Recreational to High Performance. In 2005 he was an assistant coach of a 150 member junior team at the Newport Aquatic Centre in Newport Beach, California. From 2007 to 2010, Steve was the Provincial Coach for Manitoba, during which time he was also named as the Men’s Coach for Canada’s Junior National CanAmMEx team in 2008.

A few of Steve’s coaching career highlights thus far include:

  • First ever gold medal for Manitoba Rowing at the Canada Summer Games 2009
  • Three Henley golds (and WRC record) in one year at the Royal Canadian Henley 2008;
  • Five medals at the CanAmMex International Regatta 2008; and,
  • Best ever performance (5 medals) for Manitoba Rowing at the Western Canada Summer Games 2007

The appointment of Steven as WRC Head Coach adds another coaching resource in Manitoba. As the Provincial Rowing Coach in Manitoba, Brent Figg will focus his efforts on Manitoba’s high performance athletes, building teams to compete at various provincial events (National Rowing Championship, Western Canada Summer Games, and Canada Summer Games) as well as supporting and growing Rowing Canada Aviron’s Talent Identification Program. Brent and Steven will work together to foster the best training options for rowers in Winnipeg and Manitoba.

Steven is very excited to be returning to the WRC as Head Coach. He looks forward to working with the WRC Board of Directors, coaches and members to build an environment that is inclusive, professional and robust.
